Meet Doctor Sebastian
Dr. Sebastian Baumgaertel, affectionately known to his patients as Dr. Sebastian, is a world-renown orthodontist, researcher, speaker, and published author… and he is YOUR orthodontist in Longmont, Berthoud, and Colorado’s entire Front Range.
Education and Family Legacy
Born and raised in Germany, Dr. Sebastian completed dental school top of his class at the University of Bonn and then pursued a residency in prosthodontics before following the family legacy and becoming an orthodontist like his parents. He obtained both a Certificate in Orthodontics and a Master of Science in Dentistry at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.
A Passion for Research
While at CWRU, Dr. Sebastian enjoyed the academic environment so much, that he joined the Orthodontic Department as a faculty member after graduation, and currently still holds the position of Clinical Associate Professor at his Alma Mater. His academic efforts led to the publication of over 25 peer-reviewed articles, most of them in the highly regarded American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. He also authored and co-edited two text books on orthodontics which you can see on display in our office. To this day, Dr. Sebastian is actively involved in research and education and hence contributes substantially to the future of orthodontics.
Professional Experience
With over 20 years in clinical practice very few orthodontist can match his level of experience and scientific knowledge. Dr. Sebastian understands the importance of a beautiful, confident smile, but he strongly believes that correct function is just as important. This includes proper jaw alignment and a healthy airway. Interestingly enough, we have come to learn that when tooth alignment, jaw alignment and airway development are in harmony we look better and we feel better!

Life Outside Orthodontics
When he is not practicing orthodontics, Dr. Sebastian enjoys a quiet life at home with his wife Edith and their newborn daughter Charlotte. He enjoys cooking and gardening, but also loves staying active by playing tennis, hiking, and fishing during the summer months, and skiing in the winter. Colorado is his four-seasons playground and he couldn’t be happier to live, work, play, and raise a daughter in our beautiful State.
Fun facts about Dr. Sebastian
- Speaks 5 languages: English, German, Romanian, French, and Italian (although the latter is a bit rusty)
- He is a sought after speaker at orthodontic conferences all over the world and has taught on 6 out of 7 continents.
- He has two brothers, both of which are dentists too!
- His signature dish is pizza which he makes completely from scratch. Favorite toppings: pepperoni, green peppers, and black olives.
