Early Orthodontic Treatment in Longmont and Berthoud, CO

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive an orthodontic screening by age 7. This allows Dr. Sebastian Baumgaertel to assess if and when orthodontic treatment may be needed. While most children will not require treatment at this age it is important to decide problems early in those that do. That way small problems can be addressed before they grow into big problems. In general an evaluation provides insight into future treatment needs and makes more options available. Early evaluation offers timely detection of problems, ensuring a greater chance for more effective treatment.

What Are the Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment?

Early treatment offers several advantages:

  • Eruption Guidance: Ensures teeth grow into more favorable positions.
  • Space Maintenance: Holds space for eruption of permanent teeth.
  • Reduction of Dental Injuries: Helps prevent fractures of protruding front teeth.
  • Improving jaw alignment: Guides jaw growth and dental arch development.
  • Prevention of Future Complications: Reduces the chances of needing extractions or dealing with impacted teeth later.
  • Addressing Habits: Corrects thumb-sucking, abnormal swallowing, or speech issues.
  • Space Creation for Crowded/Erupting Teeth: Helps manage limited space in the mouth for growing teeth.
  • Crossbite Correction: Addresses tooth and jaw misalignment early to prevent long-term issues.
  • Creating Facial Symmetry: Influences jaw growth to promote balanced facial features.
  • Reducing the need for permanent tooth removal: Early intervention may reduce extractions later.
  • Improved Airway: Correction of upper jaw deficiencies can improve the nasal airway and improve breathing.Ā Ā

Why Is Age 7 the Optimal Time for Screening?

By age 7, the first adult molars have usually erupted, establishing the biting relationship of the back teeth. At this time, an orthodontist can evaluate both front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. As the front teeth erupt, it is possible to get an early indication of potential problems such as an underbite, overbite, crowding, or even a gummy smile. Early screening increases the chances of achieving a healthy, beautiful and harmonious smile without removing teeth or jaw surgeries.

An exception to this rule is when airway issues are suspected in your child that may be caused by jaw growth or jaw position. Here a screening as young as age four may be recommended.

What Is the Orthodontic Observation Program?

Dr. Baumgaertel may recommend our Orthodontic Observation Program for children who don’t require immediate treatment. This program tracks the growth and eruption of permanent teeth. If needed, removal of baby teeth may be recommended to improve eruption patterns and reduce treatment time in the future. We typically monitor patients every 6 to 12 months at no cost, ensuring the right timing for when treatment should begin. This increases treatment efficiency and leverages the growth potential while avoiding over-treatment or excessively long treatment times. Throughout this process, your general dentist will be kept informed of any recommendations made during visits.

Will Early Treatment Eliminate the Need for Braces Later?

Early treatment can address significant issues and simplify future treatment. However, because not all permanent teeth are present during early treatment, most children require a follow-up phase (Phase II) with full braces or Invisalign during the teen years to finalize alignment. In some instances, further treatment may not be necessary.

Should We Still See Our Family Dentist During Treatment?

Yes! Patients with braces or other appliances need extra care to maintain their oral health. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings every six months are essential to keeping teeth and gums healthy throughout orthodontic treatment.
